Double standards in the USA

Meant to post this back in June. While the news du jour has changed, the message of this post has not:

"To be honest, I try to avoid as much as possible the media coverage of murders and crimes of violence. In recent days, however, I have not been able to avoid the story of Jessie Davis...the pregnant woman whose body was found yesterday in Canton, OH. The story breaks my heart: she was almost 9 months pregant, her two year old was left in the house and reported cryptic information about his mom's abduction, and her boyfriend (who is married to another woman) is the prime suspect. It is all so tragic. I'm thankful for the justice system in our country that is charging whomever killed this woman and her unborn child with two counts of murder. The most horrifying part of the story to me, however, is how it reveals the double standard that our country has when it comes to protecting the unborn.

I honestly do not understand the logic. A woman can kill her own baby while it's growing inside of her and it's not considered murder, but if someone else kills the child, it is murder? An abortion doctor can legally help a woman kill her child while it's in utero, but a woman's boyfriend who helps her kill her child moments after it's born is a criminal? This is complete irrationality.

As a Christian who believes that every human being (born or unborn) is a made in the image of God, I have always been passionate about protecting the unborn. This passion grew in intensity once I became pregnant myself and witnessed firsthand the mystery, fragility, and humanity of "embryos and fetuses." Over and over again in Scripture we are called to protect the weakest in our society--orphans, widows, aliens, the poor. A mother's womb should be one of the safest places for our society's most vulnerable children. Sadly in our country this is not the case. Once again, may I call you to support those groups in your community that fight this national evil by offering support and options to women with unwanted pregnacies. Support organizations that fight the battle on the legislative front. Pray about adopting a child. Pray that God would change the cultural trajectory of this country to value children as human beings made in the image of God to be valued, protected, and nurtured.

I'm still alive!

To my (five) faithful blog readers:

I am so sorry I left you staring at that pizza for so long! Perhaps you thought that I had finally eaten one slice too many...

The truth is I've been enjoying summer too much to blog (well, that and our camera was sick so I couldn't even get by with posting photos of Katie). Thankfully, our camera is better now, so here's some of the latest footage for all the KJM fans. More substantial posts to come.
